Embercut
An obsidian settlement built between dark stone fins, with bronze lifts, sheltered passages and a reservoir at its heart.
Embercut uses the gaps between immense obsidian fins as streets. Thick walls hold the day’s warmth, while bronze lift cages connect sheltered ledges. Its central reservoir is a practical landmark: routes, deliveries and meeting places are described in relation to the water.
The open-air listeners seen in One Vibration give this desert a voice in the atlas. Inside the city, the signal would be relayed along the lift landings, reaching workshops hidden behind the black ridges. Embercut’s working lore follows that exchange between a gathering outside and daily life within.
The cut was once a chain of isolated furnace shelters. Lift crews joined them after a reservoir failure forced workshops to share water. Today the lift stewards publish cargo slots on bronze boards; a trader with money still waits behind a communal water delivery.
Fin Market sells shaped furnace glass and refurbished machine housings rather than raw black stone. A workshop circle wants to keep repair knowledge public, while a private foundry offers faster service in exchange for exclusive supply contracts. The reservoir’s cooling allocation is the leverage both sides seek.
People and customs
Varied desert listeners and workshop communities need shaded routes, generous lift platforms and places to rest.
Water carriers have priority at narrow passages. Visitors ask before using a lift that is moving communal supplies.
Around the city
- Reservoir Court — The shared water basin anchors the city’s routes and meeting places.
- Bronze Lifts — Cargo platforms connect workshops on different levels of the obsidian cut.
- Fin Market — Traders shelter between the stone ridges after the hottest hours.
- Desert Threshold — The sheltered approach where travellers pause before entering the cut.
Proposed resources and trade
- Furnace glass — Heat-resistant panels made in supervised workshops.
- Obsidian tooling blanks — Cut from assigned quarry faces, with brittle edges that need packing.
- Refurbished housings — Bench-tested machine casings with a repair history.
Imports: Cooling filters, Pump seals
Lift-side Foundry Bench
Hull patch fabrication and landing-strut work; cooling capacity limits each job.
Proposed salvage and contracts
- A failed lift carriage — Recover certified parts after the steward closes the shaft.
- An abandoned furnace gauge — Check an old maintenance docket before removing it.
- The dry lift — Replace a cooling line so water carriers can use the upper lift.
- Glass without cracks — Deliver fragile panels intact and decide who receives a scarce replacement batch.
