Lanternroot
A forest settlement woven around luminous fungi, canopy paths and waterways, with room for residents who travel by wing or foot.
Lanternroot occupies the spaces a luminous forest leaves open. Platforms wrap around great fungal trunks, hanging paths connect the canopy, and quiet waterways serve the lower level. Light comes from the forest as well as from the people living within it.
The forest friends in One Vibration establish a gathering place here. The city expands that image into a community with several ways to move: overhead landings for winged residents, wide paths for those who walk, and water-level arrivals below. Its relationship with the Dreadnauts begins with listening together.
The settlement’s oldest agreement is a limit on what may be cut. Canopy stewards mark growing supports with living bands, while water crews keep a second route for people who cannot use the hanging walk. Traders pay for access to cultivated patches instead of buying the forest outright.
Canopy Market exports cured resin, woven membrane and carefully grown luminous cultures. Its healers need clean containers and alloy needles from outside. A new broker wants faster harvests; the listening keepers fear that stripping the bright patches will extinguish the paths that let residents reach home.
People and customs
Winged and ground-moving forest residents share canopy landings, broad decks and water-level routes.
Visitors follow marked paths and ask before taking a shortcut through a growing patch. A bright surface is not always a walkway.
Around the city
- Canopy Market — A ring of trading decks around the great luminous trunks.
- Rootwater Quay — The lower arrival point, reached along sheltered forest waterways.
- Hanging Walk — A canopy route with resting landings and views into the forest below.
- Listening Grove — An open gathering space lit by the surrounding fungi.
Proposed resources and trade
- Cured lantern resin — Cultivated sealant cured off the living trunk.
- Woven membrane — Flexible canopy fabric made from permitted fibre.
- Luminous cultures — Sealed cultivated samples; wild growth is not cargo.
Imports: Sterile containers, Alloy needles
Rootwater Maintenance Deck
Leak sealing, air-filter cleaning and canopy-skiff repairs; no heavy ship refit.
Proposed salvage and contracts
- A fallen listening receiver — Return its voice archive before claiming its casing.
- A lost survey pack — Follow canopy markers and preserve the living supports around it.
- The dim path — Restore a listening-post power line without draining the settlement’s path lights.
- A clean sample — Carry sealed cultures and return the reusable containers to the growers.
Future Plunderverse exploration
